Lookup Exact Registry entry

Specify that a value entered into a Lookup List field must match exactly with an existing value in the Lookup List.

This entry ensures that if a term entered into a Lookup List field varies from an existing term (due to case or punctuation for instance), the user is notified that a new term has been entered, allowing them to add the variation to the list or choose an existing term. In a ReadOnly Lookup List it is necessary to choose an existing value (no variation will be recognised as correct).

The addition of Unicode support with Vitalware 3.0 affects other parts of the system than searching. The most notable change is that punctuation and diacritics are now significant in Lookup List values.

When comparing Lookup List entries prior to Vitalware 3.0, punctuation was removed before the entries were processed. Hence a Lookup List entry of Smith (?) was treated the same as an entry for Smith, so only one value (the first one entered in the system) would be stored. Vitalware 3.0 onwards retains punctuation and diacritics when comparing Lookup List values, meaning that the two entries in our example are treated as separate and we end up with two entries in the Lookup List itself.

When working with Lookup List values it is important to recognise that punctuation and diacritics are now taken into account when comparing values: Zoe and Zoë are different Lookup List values. It is important to keep this in mind when using the Lookup Exact Registry entry, for example.

column

is the name of a Lookup List column to which to apply Lookup Exact. By setting column to Default, Lookup Exact is applied to all Lookup Lists in a table.

boolean

is true (a strict comparison of values is enforced) or false (a strict comparison of values is not enforced).

Note: If this entry is not present, a setting of false is assumed.
